Hatigarh : A Beautiful Forest Land of Amsoi

Hatigarh is a name of Village of Amsoi area. The “TIWA” people are living in this village from very ancient time. The Hatigarh forest land is situated in southern part of this Tiwa village ( Tiwa Tribal people was formerly known as “LALUNG”). Assamese word “GARH” means Fort. Three side of Hatigarh forest land is rampart by blue hills in southern side. So the land is called by the local people as Garh (Fort). The word Hatigarh means a fort of elephants. From very ancient time the place is known as a dwelling Forest place of wild elephants.

This Hatigarh Forest land is situated 6 K.M. distance towards eastern side of Amsoi Forest beat office under Dharamtul Forest range of Forest Department of Assam. In present time, a Joint Forest Management Committee of Hatigarh Tribal village and Forest Department of Assam has planned to make green the area of 165 hectors of forest land again. World Bank Co-operated the committee with financial help under “NORMIL” scheme. The plantation area of the committee has covered the area of 165 hectors of forest land.

The entrance of the Hatigarh Joint Forest Management Committee’s plantation area, there is a coloured and beautiful bamboo made small house where visitors can see the Map of the whole area. There are two hectors of land for nursery of different kind of trees in the middle of the plantation field. To protect the area from wild elephant there is “Tongi- Ghar” in a tree of the nursery. The plantation area is very very beautiful to look at. A visitor will be pleased to visit this forest area. Thought yet have not used for this purpose as local people hope. After coming to Amsoi a visitor can reach Hatigarh forest by going 6 K.M. towards east thought Amsoi- Chaparmukh road from Amsoi Forest beat office of Dharamtul Forest range.
